Our recent acquisition by Exponent paves the way for localised agility and global growth. Read the Q&A with Mike to discover what this means for our customers and supply partners.
I’d like to start by extending a huge thank you to our customers and supply partners for your overwhelming support during this transition. The volume of positive feedback we’ve received has been incredible. Many of our team members have been in this market for a long time, and the relationships we’ve built are incredibly strong. Your appreciation for our teams and your confidence in our organisation throughout this period of change have been invaluable.
Optimas has been through acquisitions before. Why is this time different?
We’ve been through a few acquisitions, the last one being in 2015. Back then, the Optimas entity was brand new. Even though we had been operating in the market for a long time, we suddenly had to navigate operating with a new identity that no one recognised. That was tough.
This acquisition marks a new era. This time, we’re in a much stronger position. We have retained the strong brand identity that we’ve spent a decade building, and we are emerging from a highly successful, multi-year business transformation. These factors have laid a solid foundation for our ambitious growth plans.
Can you tell us more about the multi-year transformation?
A major part of that transformation was moving away from a matrix structure and shifting toward a regionalised, P&L-led approach. This regionalisation gives us immense flexibility and clarity, better aligning our operations with how our customers and supply partners actually work.
Our new structure fully embraces an “in-country, for-country” philosophy. By building self-sufficient, local hubs powered by brilliant local talent, we’re able to tailor our products and services directly to local demands, navigate regional regulations seamlessly and execute on opportunities at pace.
How will this affect existing customers and supply partners?
On a day-to-day level, there’s no change. The real change is happening behind the scenes, where we’ve optimised our operations to serve our customers and supply partners faster.
Because we are now fully agile and region-focused, we can adapt rapidly to local market shifts and global geopolitical changes. This is critical in the complex, often fragmented industry within which we all operate. Our mission is to simplify that fragmentation.
We are deeply embedded within our customers’ operations, and we intend to keep it that way. We look forward to strengthening our ongoing partnerships while forging exciting new ones in this next evolution of Optimas International.
What are Optimas International’s growth plans moving forward?
We are focused, strategic, diligent and ready to execute. We plan to grow both organically and through targeted acquisitions.
We are actively looking for distribution businesses to strengthen our geographic coverage in key regions. While we are exploring different markets and product lines, finding the right cultural fit is paramount. We want to connect with companies that are ready for the next step but have perhaps been cautious in the past. If there’s an opportunity to add value and our ambitions align, we want to help them grow.
Which regions are you prioritising for this expansion?
We are perfectly positioned to scale in the UK, EMEA and APAC. We have the regional infrastructure in place to accelerate our expansion into new geographic markets, customer verticals and product categories. Our ambition is to deepen our presence in established markets, while simultaneously expanding into new industries and territories that offer substantial long-term growth opportunities.
A key pillar of our growth strategy is market diversification. We are broadening our exposure and building a presence in high-growth industries such as defence and semiconductor capital equipment, where we are already seeing strong customer demand and engagement.
APAC, particularly China, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, is a powerful growth engine for the business. This region presents significant opportunities across both our established and emerging sectors. We are already off to a flying start in those areas and have no intention of slowing down as we continue to diversify our customer base and expand our global footprint.
How would you sum up Optimas International?
Optimas International is more than a distributor, we’re a full-service fastener partner. We simplify the supply chain for our customers by taking a tech-enabled, engineering-led approach with data and analytics ingrained in everything we do. With over 40,000 SKUs across 20 distinct categories, we offer a diverse and adaptable suite of products and services designed to solve complex engineering problems, simplify and streamline supply chains, reduce total cost of ownership and turn bill-of-materials complexity into efficient simplicity.
