Radial Coupling

Reliable radial couplings for precise tunnel ring assembly.

Radial_Coupling_Part

Product Description

Optimas International supplies radial coupling components for precast concrete tunnel segments, designed to connect adjoining segments and help maintain the shape and alignment of each tunnel ring during installation.

Application

Engineered for Accurate Tunnel Ring Assembly

Radial couplings are used to connect the adjoining edges of precast concrete tunnel segments as they are assembled to form a complete ring. They help maintain the shape and geometry of the ring while allowing the connected segments to work together as the tunnel is constructed and placed under load.

Our innovative radial coupling system replaces the conventional combination of a guiding rod and radial bolt, simplifying tunnel segment assembly. The system comprises of two female ‘Omega’-shaped cast-in components and a male connector, providing secure connection between segments.

Designed for compatibility with circumferential dowel systems, our radial coupling solution enables segments to be fully assembled without bolts, eliminating screwing operations at height and the need for recesses on tunnel intrados, helping streamline installation and improve the finished tunnel lining.

Materials and Quality

Materials, Finishes and Quality Matched to the Application

Radial coupling components need to be matched closely to the geometry of the tunnel segments they connect. Dimensions and tolerances are therefore specified around the segment profile, ring design and tunnel diameter, helping ensure adjoining segments can be connected and aligned correctly.

At Optimas International, we support radial coupling supply on a project-by-project basis, working from the relevant segment and ring design requirements. This allows the radial coupling specification to be considered alongside the wider tunnel joint system, including bolting and dowel systems.

The radial coupling solution is selected around the structural requirements of the completed ring, including the need to withstand compressive and shear forces as the tunnel is constructed and loaded. This application-led approach helps ensure the components are appropriately matched to the tunnel design rather than treated as a generic fastening component.

Frequently Asked Questions

Radial coupling is used to connect adjacent precast concrete tunnel segments along their edges within the same tunnel ring. It helps secure the segment-to-segment joint and maintain the required shape and geometry of the ring during construction and service.

A radial coupling connects segments edge-to-edge within the same tunnel ring. A circumferential joint connects one completed tunnel ring to the next. The two joint types perform different roles within the tunnel lining.

As precast concrete segments are assembled to form a circular tunnel ring, radial couplings connect the adjoining segment edges. By securing these connections, they help maintain the intended ring shape and alignment as the tunnel is constructed and loaded.

Yes. Optimas International supplies radial coupling components with dimensions and tolerances matched to the specific segment profile and ring design. Factors such as tunnel diameter and structural requirements can be considered when defining the specification.

Radial coupling components are used in joints that experience compressive and shear forces as the tunnel ring is constructed and subsequently loaded in service. The coupling specification is therefore matched to the structural requirements of the tunnel design.

Radial coupling can be used in a range of metro, rail, road, utility and sewer tunnelling projects where precast concrete segments are assembled into tunnel rings.

Optimas International works with contractors and precast manufacturers to define radial coupling requirements around the segment profile, ring design, tunnel diameter and structural requirements. This project-specific approach helps ensure the coupling works effectively as part of the wider tunnel joint system.

Yes. Alongside dowel systems, we supply bolting systems, guiding rods, grouting and lifting systems, marking plates, radial coupling and shear cones to support a complete tunnel segment jointing project.

Yes. Radial coupling can be specified alongside dowel systems and other tunnel joint components to provide an integrated solution for connecting and supporting precast concrete tunnel segments.
